The Simple Programmer Email Course

A lot of the impetus for me posting more regularly, moving off of Medium, and trying to focus my content comes from an email course I recently subscribed to by John Sonmez at SimpleProgrammer. I first found out about John through his Pluralsight course The Go Programming Language and, since then, have made sure to listen to his guest interviews on .NET Rocks and JavaScript Jabber. He also has a really good book out called Soft Skills. Also a couple podcasts including Entreprogrammers.

The email course John’s been so generous to offer is about Writing A Blog that Boosts Your Career. I’m always reading and listening to material about entrepreneurship as a programmer because my goal is to become an entrepreneur. There, I said it. I want to work for myself, control my own career, work at home, and spend more time with my family.

Looking back, some of the books I’ve recently read about entrepreneurship include 6 Months to 6 Figures, 4 Hour Work Week, How to Win Friends and Influence People, Give and Take, and Smartcuts. There’s a pattern though… I’m haven’t really been taking much ACTION. I tend to treat learning and absorbing information as a comfort zone. I decided to subscribe to John’s email just to kick things in gear a bit - to start SHIPPING.

So far, the course has been great. As a result of the inspiration from the email course, I’ve built this site and a portfolio. I also built up simple workflow with wercker so that I can easily publish new blog posts and update my portfolio regularly. John’s been really responsive when I email him examples of my progress, which shows that he really does want to help other developers stand out among the crowd using the techniques that he’s been successful with.
